Xreal Aura: Android XR wired smart glasses launch
Original: Xreal Aura is a new wired headset powered by Android XR
Why This Matters
Android XR's partner strategy gets its first tethered consumer device at scale.
Xreal launched the Aura wired smart glasses at Google's Android Developer Summit on Oct. 28, running Android XR on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite. Prices start at $1,099 (launch offer) in the US, Canada, Japan, and South Korea.
Announced at the Android Developer Summit, the Xreal Aura smart glasses are tethered to a separate processing puck rather than running compute onboard. They feature Sony Micro-OLED displays at 1200p, 120Hz, and a 95-degree field of view — specs that beat Ray-Ban Meta Display on paper. The tradeoff: Aura weighs 95 grams versus Meta's 69 grams, and users must carry the puck. Bose handles audio; Google's Gemini acts as an on-screen AI assistant.
At launch, the glasses support popular Google Play apps and a handful of XR-specific titles including Fallout: Factions and NBA App for Android XR. Users can also plug in a PC or gaming console via USB-C to use Aura as an augmented display or multi-monitor setup.
Two configurations are available: 12GB + 256GB at $1,099 (regular $1,279) and 16GB + 512GB at $1,299 (regular $1,499), with launch pricing valid through December. Shipping begins mid-November.
Xreal CEO Chi Xu acknowledged in May that the smart glasses business is financially brutal for everyone involved, but argued the industry has hit an inflection point: "You need all the key pieces ready — the hardware, the operating system, and a great user interface." Google is leaning on partners like Xreal and Samsung to drive Android XR adoption, mirroring its smartphone playbook.
