Tesla to end Cybertruck production in 2027

Why This Matters

Tesla's robotaxi bet is now directly cannibalizing its core vehicle lineup.

Tesla will halt Cybertruck production in 2027, CEO Elon Musk announced on X. The Texas factory space will be repurposed for Cybercab robotaxi manufacturing after the truck sold only tens of thousands of units over three years.

Elon Musk confirmed on X that Tesla will stop building the Cybertruck next year, citing plans to shift the Austin, Texas factory to Cybercab robotaxi production. The move marks a quiet but definitive end to a vehicle Musk once called his personal favorite project.

The numbers tell the story plainly. At the 2023 delivery event, Musk predicted 250,000 Cybertrucks per year. Total sales over three years came in at just tens of thousands. The truck also never hit the promised sub-$40,000 price point, launching at roughly $60,000, and fell more than 100 miles short of the 500-mile range originally advertised.

This is the third Tesla product discontinued in service of the company's AI and robotics pivot. Earlier in 2026, Tesla ended Model S and Model X production, redirecting that factory space to Optimus humanoid robot manufacturing. Meanwhile, Cybercabs have been operating in Austin for two months without major incidents, with a Dallas expansion scheduled later this month. Tesla also runs Model Y robotaxis in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and three Florida cities.

The Cybertruck's troubled arc began at its 2019 reveal, when the supposedly shatterproof windows broke on stage. Pandemic delays pushed the launch to late 2023, and its polarizing stainless-steel design never found the mass-market audience Tesla needed.
