Tailwind Labs, creator of the popular CSS framework Tailwind CSS, announced on September 9, 2026 that it is joining Shopify. The framework is currently installed over 110 million times per week and is used by companies including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, and Reddit.
Tailwind Labs founder Adam Wathan announced that the company is joining Shopify, giving the framework what he described as 'a stable long-term home.' Wathan started Tailwind CSS over nine years ago with the goal of making it easier to build beautiful interfaces. The framework now sees over 110 million installs per week and is used by major platforms including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit, and Shopify itself.
Wathan cited Shopify's broad product surface area as a key reason for the acquisition, noting that merchants, customers, and Shopify's own admin tools provide real-world challenges that can drive meaningful improvements to the framework. He also pointed to Shopify's early adoption of Tailwind at scale and its exploration of agentic commerce as additional factors.
All Tailwind CSS open-source projects will remain MIT-licensed, and the Tailwind Labs team will continue to lead and maintain them with Shopify's support. On the commercial side, existing customers will retain access to Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, but new sign-ups for these products are being closed so the team can focus on Tailwind CSS work within Shopify.
