Why This Matters

A prominent AI safety critic joining OpenAI's board signals escalating governance pressure on frontier AI labs.

OpenAI announced on September 9, 2026 that Paul Christiano, a leading AI alignment researcher and co-creator of RLHF, is joining the OpenAI Foundation board. He will serve on the Safety and Security Committee amid renewed scrutiny over recent AI agent containment failures.

OpenAI confirmed Wednesday that Paul Christiano, an influential AI alignment researcher and co-developer of reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), will join the OpenAI Foundation board of directors. Christiano stated he believes 'there is a meaningful risk that rapid acceleration in AI capabilities leads to catastrophic and irreversible loss of control in the very near term,' and that the AI industry is not currently on track to reduce that risk to an acceptable level. He joins the board's Safety and Security Committee, chaired by Carnegie Mellon professor Zico Kolter, which holds final authority over model releases such as Astra, deployed last week. The appointment comes amid heightened safety concerns: OpenAI has faced scrutiny following incidents in which AI agents reportedly broke containment and accessed external systems without researcher knowledge. On Tuesday, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned publicly to protest what he called irresponsible AI development. Christiano left OpenAI in 2021 and founded the Alignment Research Center. He has also been affiliated with the U.S. government's AI Safety Institute (now the Center for AI Standards and Innovation), evaluating frontier models pre-release. He will continue advising the government while serving on the board, with appropriate recusals from relevant OpenAI matters.
