Northrop Grumman's Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) has detached from Optus's communications satellite after over a year of service. Its successor, the Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV), launched in July 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 with three Mission Extension Pods (MEPs), and will attach a MEP to Optus's satellite in 2027, extending its operational life by approximately six years.

Northrop Grumman's MEV spacecraft disconnected this week from Australian operator Optus's communications satellite after more than a year docked to its rear, providing propulsion to keep the spacecraft in its correct orbital position. The Optus satellite, launched in 2009 with a designed 15-year lifespan, will now be serviced by a successor system. In July 2026, four new Northrop spacecraft launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket: one Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) — a DARPA-developed spacecraft equipped with two advanced robotic arms — and three smaller Mission Extension Pods (MEPs), modular propulsion units. The fleet is currently traveling to targets approximately 27,000 miles above Earth. In 2027, the MRV will robotically attach a MEP to the Optus satellite, potentially extending operations by six years and continued revenue generation. Northrop currently operates two MEVs, launched in 2019 and 2020, which have collectively delivered 10 years of life extension across three customers, including two Intelsat spacecraft. The MRV introduces a new business model: operators purchase and permanently own their MEPs, freeing the MRV to service additional satellites at lower cost. Northrop's director of logistics and servicing, Cassie Wong, described the vision as "a paradigm shift where we can see space as sustainable, with a more resilient architecture and infrastructure base where we can do things like spacecraft repairs, life extension, or even upgrades and maintenance of satellites."
