Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, 2026, featuring Breathing Emergency Detection powered by an on-device AI algorithm. The feature uses PPG, accelerometer, and barometer sensors to detect oxygen drops and automatically call emergency services. It launches in select EU markets first, pending FDA clearance for the US.
Google introduced the Pixel Watch 5 alongside the Pixel 11 smartphone family, highlighting Breathing Emergency Detection as its flagship health feature. The capability uses a combination of PPG sensors, accelerometer, and barometer data processed by an on-device AI algorithm to detect persistent drops in blood oxygen saturation caused by events such as drug toxicity, severe pneumonia, choking, or accidents. When triggered, the watch can automatically contact Emergency Services and share the user's location.
Product Manager Francis Hoe stated the feature is 'AI-based' and runs entirely on the device. Because it has not received FDA clearance, it will not launch in the United States at launch and will instead be available in select European Union markets first. Google noted the feature is not intended for users with preexisting respiratory conditions and is not designed to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
The Pixel Watch 4 will also receive this feature via a software update. Additionally, blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends are coming to the Google Health app for Fitbit Air, Pixel Watch 3, Watch 4, and Watch 5 users later in fall 2026. Google is grouping these capabilities under a new category called Health Guardian, which also includes irregular rhythm notifications, Loss of Pulse detection, and Sleep Breathing Quality, consolidating them into a single accessible dashboard.
