Moonshot AI targets $2B annual revenue amid distillation controversy

Why This Matters

Moonshot's trajectory tests how far open-weight AI labs can scale commercially without closed-model margins.

Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI is targeting $2 billion in annualized revenue by end of 2026, double its August run rate, Bloomberg reported. The goal follows strong adoption of its K3 open-weight model, which generates up to 300 billion tokens daily on OpenRouter — but the company faces Anthropic allegations of large-scale model distillation.

Moonshot AI, the Chinese lab behind the Kimi chatbot, has set an ambitious revenue target of $2 billion annualized by year-end 2026 — a doubling of its August revenue run rate, according to Bloomberg. The growth is driven by K3, the company's open-weight model released this summer. Despite a slight dip in recent usage, OpenRouter data shows K3 generating as many as 300 billion tokens per day on the platform.

For context, that target still falls far short of OpenAI's reported $40 billion and Anthropic's $65 billion annualized revenue. Because K3's weights are freely available, Moonshot operates at significantly lower margins than closed-weight competitors — yet the numbers suggest open-weight models can still build meaningful revenue at scale.

The optimistic figures arrive alongside serious legal and ethical clouds. Earlier this week, Anthropic alleged that Moonshot ran a long-running distillation campaign, routing nearly 300,000 requests from Kimi directly to Claude Opus and collecting more than 23 million responses from Anthropic's models for use in Moonshot's own training — practices Anthropic described as a terms-of-service violation and potentially illegal.
