Jellyfin 12.0, announced by Core Team member Cody Robibero, marks a major milestone for the open-source media server project — including a version naming change (dropping the legacy '10' prefix). The release finalizes the database schema conversion begun in 10.11, transforms that foundation into tangible performance improvements, and adds long-awaited support for books and comics.
Upgrade requirements are strict: users must be on 10.10.7 or any 10.11.x build before upgrading. Direct upgrades from older versions are unsupported. A full manual backup of data and config directories is mandatory, as the database is actively rewritten on first boot with no automated rollback path.
Additional migration notes include: usernames are now case-insensitive (duplicates will block migration); a full library scan is required post-upgrade; and the first scan will take considerably longer than usual. Support for legacy /emby/ and /mediabrowser/ API endpoints has been removed, meaning outdated third-party clients may stop functioning. Third-party plugins built for 10.11 will not load in 12.0 and require updated builds from their respective authors.
