Shopify announced in September 2026 that it is moving its mobile development stack from React Native back to native Swift and Kotlin. The company cited dramatically improved AI coding models as the key factor that eliminated the cost advantage of cross-platform development it adopted in 2020.
Shopify made the decision to go all-in on React Native in 2020 for three core reasons: avoiding duplicate feature builds for iOS and Android, enabling non-mobile developers to contribute across the stack, and reducing time spent chasing feature parity. By the company's own account, that bet was 'extremely successful.' As recently as January 2025, Shopify publicly stated that the future of React Native remained bright and that it planned to keep investing in the framework.
However, the company reversed course after rapid advances in AI coding models changed the underlying economics of mobile development. Shopify began using LLMs for software development as early as 2021—prior to ChatGPT's public release—initially for feature implementation, bug investigation, and code review. As coding agents improved dramatically through 2025 and into 2026, the cost of building the same feature separately in Swift and Kotlin dropped significantly, eliminating one of the primary arguments for React Native.
The company acknowledged ongoing investments required under React Native, including performance optimization, foundational framework improvements, and keeping up with external dependencies, though these had previously been considered acceptable tradeoffs. With AI agents now reducing native development overhead, Shopify re-evaluated its mobile stack from first principles and concluded native development is the right path forward.
