Google simplifies Android password manager switching
Original: Google is making it easier to switch between password managers on Android
Why This Matters
Frictionless credential migration could accelerate adoption of third-party password managers on Android.
Google on September 10, 2026 introduced a new Android feature enabling seamless password and passkey migration between password manager apps without CSV file exports. Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane are currently supported, with Android 8 and above required.
Google announced a new password manager switching experience for Android on Thursday, allowing users to transfer passwords and passkeys between apps without downloading CSV files. Under the new system, users open their target password manager app, select the import option, and Android automatically detects other manager apps installed on the device. It then coordinates the transfer directly between the two apps, letting users review and approve the data being moved in just a few taps. The feature also supports passkey migration, meaning users do not need to reconfigure passkeys after switching apps. Google noted that eliminating CSV files reduces the risk of sensitive credential data being exposed during the transfer process. The new experience is already live in Google's own password manager and with select partners: Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane, with additional apps to be added in the future. The feature is available on all devices running Android 8 or higher.
