Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max with Variable Aperture Camera

Apple debuted the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its September 9, 2026 event, marking the first time aperture control has appeared in an iPhone camera. The new 48MP Fusion Main camera uses six laser-cut blades controlled by a rotor mechanism to smoothly transition between four aperture settings, enabling better low-light performance and creative depth-of-field control. Users can manually adjust aperture in the Camera app, and an API is available for third-party developers. Both models are powered by the A20 Pro chip paired with a next-generation vapor chamber for the highest sustained performance in iPhone history. iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers the largest battery life increase ever on iPhone, attributed to Apple silicon advances and a larger physical battery. The lineup runs iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and an upgraded Siri AI. Additional upgrades include a smaller Dynamic Island, enhanced Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls, and industry-leading video capabilities. The devices come in four finishes: black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy. Greg Joswiak, Apple's SVP of Worldwide Marketing, stated the improvements represent 'huge leaps forward' rather than incremental updates in camera, performance, battery, and intelligence.
