Mozilla Launches Built-in Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Original: Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Why This Matters
Native iOS ad blocking expands Firefox's privacy toolset on a platform where extensions remain restricted.
Mozilla introduced a built-in Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS, blocking third-party ads and ad-related trackers before they load. The feature uses Apple's WebKit Content Blocker technology and the EasyList filter list. It is off by default and can be enabled via Settings > Browsing > Ad Blocker.
Mozilla has announced a native Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS, designed to reduce screen clutter and distractions caused by pop-ups, overlays, and third-party advertisements. The feature leverages Apple's WebKit Content Blocker technology combined with the EasyList filter list to determine which content gets blocked before it loads. No separate extension is required; users can activate it directly in Settings > Browsing > Ad Blocker. It remains off by default, giving users full choice over whether to use it.
The blocker does not prevent all ads. Ads served directly by the site being visited, search result ads, sponsored shortcuts, and sponsored content displayed on Firefox's new tab page are explicitly excluded from blocking. The feature works alongside Firefox's existing Enhanced Tracking Protection, which already limits cross-site tracking.
Mozilla noted that iOS differs from Desktop and Android, where a robust extension ecosystem supports third-party ad blockers. Because iOS does not support browser extensions in the same way, the company chose to build the functionality directly into the browser. Mozilla emphasized that advertising funds much of the open web and that the Ad Blocker is intentionally optional to balance user control with publisher support. Users who encounter issues can report them via Mozilla Connect.
