Harbinger raises $240M in Series D round

Why This Matters

EV startups diversifying into defense signals a broader shift in clean-vehicle funding strategy.

Electric truck startup Harbinger closed a $240M Series D co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn, and Ridgeline, bringing total funding past $650M. FedEx also re-invested and placed a 2,000-truck, $300M+ order.

LA-based Harbinger has closed a $240 million Series D, almost exactly one year after its $160 million Series C. The round was co-led by Tiger Global, Capricorn's technology impact fund, and defense-focused Ridgeline. Repeat backers FedEx, Maniv, Greycroft, and Volkswagen-backed Leitmotif also participated. Total funding now exceeds $650 million.

FedEx's involvement has deepened significantly. The shipping company's SVP of safety and transportation, Paul Melander, joined Harbinger's board, and FedEx recently placed its first large order: 2,000 trucks worth more than $300 million.

Founded in 2022 by ex-Canoo and QuantumScape employees, Harbinger started with a single electric truck chassis but has expanded aggressively. It acquired autonomy startup Phantom AI, is developing hybrid emergency vehicles, and has unveiled a driverless hybrid-electric platform for military use — the pivot that drew Ridgeline's defense-focused capital into this round.
