Why This Matters

A $330M deal would add a large, young-skewing audience to NYT's media portfolio.

The New York Times Company has entered exclusive negotiations to buy film social network Letterboxd for $330 million, per a report by the Times itself. Letterboxd has grown from 3M users in 2021 to 28M in 2026.

The New York Times Company is reportedly in exclusive talks to acquire Letterboxd, the social platform where film fans log, rate, and review movies, for $330 million. The report comes from the Times itself — a detail that TechCrunch's Amanda Silberling noted with a pointed "lol," adding that the anonymous sourcing may well originate internally.

Letterboxd, often described as Goodreads for movies, has seen sharp user growth: 3 million members in January 2021, reaching 28 million by April 2026. More than half its users are under 35, making it a rare platform with genuine Gen Z traction. The service is free with a paid tier for advanced features, and is projected to earn $15 million this year — roughly 4.5% of the acquisition price being discussed.

The platform was already known to be seeking a buyer. Film studio A24 had reportedly expressed interest but was priced out; Sony was also named as a potential suitor. The NYT Company declined to comment to its own reporters.
