Pangram, a New York-based AI detection startup founded by Stanford AI and ML graduates Max Spero and Bradley Emi, has raised $9 million in funding led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Haystack, ScOp, Script Capital, and Cadenza. The round coincides with the launch of Pangram 4, its next-generation text detection model, and Pangram Image, an AI image detection model currently in research preview.
Pangram 4 claims over 99% accuracy in identifying AI-assisted writing, mixed human-AI content, and outputs from AI humanizer programs. The company's detection system was trained on tens of millions of known human documents, with a 'synthetic mirror' created for each — replicating topic, length, and tone via a frontier LLM — to teach the model stylistic differences between human and AI writing. The system does not rely on copy-paste metadata or watermarks.
Founded roughly two years ago following ChatGPT's launch, Pangram targets use cases including SEO spam, disinformation campaigns, academic fraud, and legal misuse such as lawyers submitting fake AI-generated citations. CEO Spero emphasized the importance of detecting varying levels of AI assistance, not just fully AI-generated text, and supports disclosure of AI use rather than an outright ban.
