ZuckOff: App That Detects Nearby Camera Glasses via Bluetooth
Original: ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room
Why This Matters
As camera-embedded wearables spread, passive detection tools fill a gap that OS-level privacy controls don't address.
ZuckOff is an independent iOS/Android app that listens for Bluetooth signals broadcast by Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Snap Spectacles to alert users when camera-equipped wearables are in the room. No account required, no data leaves the device.
ZuckOff detects camera glasses by scanning for manufacturer-specific Bluetooth identifiers: Luxottica/Ray-Ban Meta uses 0x0D53, Meta wearables broadcast 0x058E, and Snap Spectacles emit 0x03C2. The app logs every Bluetooth device it hears, shows the raw evidence behind each flag, and lets users silence alerts for their own pairs permanently. On iPhone, it supports background alerts, a Home Screen widget, a Lock Screen Live Activity, and Shortcuts/Siri integration. Logs export as CSV. The app is built by an independent developer who crowdfunds hardware testing via Suppi and Buy Me a Coffee. Important caveats are stated plainly: glasses are loudest at power-on or when leaving their case, but some standalone models go silent during recording. A detection is not proof of recording, and silence is not proof of privacy. The developer actively seeks hardware loans to expand detection rules and is open to partnering with privacy organizations.
