Uber has partnered with or invested in more than 30 autonomous vehicle companies over the past two years, taking a global approach after selling its Uber ATG unit to Aurora in 2020. The company is now aggressively re-entering the AV space through deals and equity stakes worldwide.
Uber, which once developed its own autonomous vehicle technology through Uber Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) founded in 2014, exited the AV space in 2020 following a series of setbacks — including a Waymo trade secrets lawsuit, CEO Travis Kalanick's resignation, and a fatal 2018 crash in Tempe, Arizona. At that point, Uber sold ATG to Aurora, Jump to Lime, and Elevate to Joby Aviation, while retaining equity stakes in each.
Just two years later, Uber began re-entering the AV space through partnerships and investments. Deal activity accelerated in 2024. As of the latest filings, Uber — through its holding company Neben Holdings — owns 325.97 million Aurora Class A shares, representing a 19.7% Class A equity stake and 6.9% voting power. Uber Freight and Aurora expanded their collaboration in June 2024, and by May 2025, Aurora's self-driving trucks were completing roundtrip hauls between Dallas and Houston via Uber Freight.
In June 2026, Uber and Autobrains announced plans to launch a robotaxi program in Munich, pending regulatory approval. TechCrunch is tracking all of Uber's AV partnerships in a continuously updated deal tracker.
