Toyota is preparing an all-new generation of its Corolla — the best-selling car in history with over 57 million units sold since 1966 — that will include battery EV, PHEV, hybrid, and gas variants. The EV version is expected to offer at least 250 miles of range in single- and dual-motor configurations.
Toyota is overhauling the Corolla for the first time in a generation, and the next version will be its most ambitious yet. Previewed in concept form at the Japan Mobility Show, the new Corolla is expected to ride on a heavily modified TNGA-C platform capable of supporting all powertrain types — from pure ICE to battery electric.
CEO Koji Sato framed the project as an open question: 'How should the Corolla evolve?' His answer, delivered on stage: make 'good-looking cars that everyone will want to drive,' regardless of power source. The lineup is expected to include gas, hybrid, PHEV, and BEV variants.
Toyota engineers told Car and Driver the hybrid will pair a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor for roughly 134 hp combined — 10–20% more efficient than the current setup, with AWD potentially on the table. The pure EV Corolla is projected at 250-plus miles of range. PHEV details remain undisclosed.
NHK's behind-the-scenes broadcast at Toyota's 'top secret' development site included a rare comment from chairman Akio Toyoda, who warned in July that Toyota 'cannot survive' without adapting to competition and technology from China. Concept imagery showed at least four body styles: sedan, hatchback, crossover, and a GR performance variant.
