$9 NFC Key Physically Locks Addictive Apps

Original: This $9 key physically locks your most addictive apps

Why This Matters

Physical app-blocking hardware represents a growing niche as software-only screen-time tools prove insufficient for many users.

Autonomous Key is a $9 NFC physical key that pairs with a companion app to lock distracting apps like Instagram and TikTok. Users must physically scan the key to regain access, with each session lasting up to 60 minutes. It supports Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+, with no subscription required.

Autonomous Key is a compact NFC device (~3 inches) designed to combat smartphone addiction through a physical barrier rather than willpower-based reminders. After pairing with its companion app, users lock selected apps such as Instagram or TikTok, and must physically scan the key to unlock them for sessions of up to 60 minutes. The idea is that leaving the key in another room or at the gym turns an impulsive app-open into a deliberate action.

At $9, it significantly undercuts competitors: Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59). While Brick offers extras like Sleep Mode and in-app purchase blocking, Autonomous Key covers core functionality at a fraction of the cost. One key can pair with multiple phones, making it family-friendly.

The companion app includes AI-powered usage insights with a 'sassy' personality that comments on behavior patterns. No subscription or premium tier is required. However, TechCrunch testing noted occasional NFC scan failures, and losing the key requires uninstalling/reinstalling the app if apps are locked. A backup unlock method is in development. The device launched via Kickstarter and began shipping in late July 2026, available in five colors.
