Tesla announced on X that its long-delayed Roadster 2 reveal is moving from October 1 to October 15, 2026, because of severe weather predicted at the outdoor Waco, Texas venue. The event must be held outdoors, reportedly because Tesla has been integrating cold gas thrusters from SpaceX that are designed to give the car some airborne capability. 'We've been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we've made the difficult decision to reschedule,' Tesla wrote on X.
The delay is far from the first. Tesla unveiled the Roadster concept back in November 2017 alongside the Semi, promising delivery within a few years. The company collected $50,000 deposits from reservation holders, with some paying $250,000 for one of 1,000 'Founders Series' units priced at around $200,000. Those customers have been waiting nearly nine years. At one point, Elon Musk planned to hold the reveal on April Fools' Day 2026, joking at Tesla's 2025 annual meeting that it would give him 'some deniability' if things slipped again. Even after the October 15 reveal, Musk has said production is still a year or more away.
