Valar Atomics raises $1B round led by Sequoia's Shaun Maguire
Original: Sequoia’s Shaun Maguire leads $1B round for nuclear startup Valar Atomics
Why This Matters
The $1B raise signals intensifying investor interest in SMRs as AI-driven power demand accelerates.
Nuclear startup Valar Atomics raised $1 billion in equity led by Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, plus a $200M credit line from Erebor and other banks. Bloomberg reported the company's valuation at $6 billion. The firm builds small modular reactors (SMRs) and aims to manufacture reactor fleets.
Valar Atomics, a nuclear startup focused on small modular reactors (SMRs), announced on August 3, 2026 that it has raised $1 billion in equity in a round led by Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, who is joining the company's board. The company also secured a $200 million line of credit from Erebor and other banks. Bloomberg reported the startup's valuation at $6 billion, though Valar itself did not disclose the figure. Valar's SMRs are factory-built, miniaturized power plants designed to be cheaper and faster to construct than traditional nuclear reactors. In June, the company demonstrated its Ward 250 reactor powering an Nvidia Blackwell system and announced a deal with Nvidia to develop a waterless 30MW AI factory. CEO Isaiah Taylor noted that development cycles are accelerating: the NOVA core took two years to complete, while the Ward 250 reached criticality in seven months. The company said the new funding will enable it to manufacture fleets of SMRs. Other investors in the round include Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72 Ventures, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners. Valar joins a growing field: Antares recently raised $470 million and X-energy raised $1 billion via IPO.
