Roblox adds AI game creation and cross-platform play

Original: Roblox is making it easier to build games with AI — and play them outside Roblox

Why This Matters

Roblox repositioning as a cross-platform game engine challenges Unity and Epic for the creator economy.

At its annual RDC on September 11, 2026, Roblox announced AI-powered game creation expansion, cross-platform publishing for mobile/PC/consoles, NPC playtesting, and new creator financial tools including a Roblox Wallet backed by Airwallex. Creators have earned over $5B since 2013, with $1.7B in the last 12 months alone.

At the 2026 Roblox Developer Conference, the company unveiled a wave of updates spanning game creation, distribution, and creator payments. Its AI game-building tool 'Build,' first announced in July and initially limited to New Zealand, is now expanding to Serbia and Singapore. It gains desktop access, an asset library, iterative control, and a prompt-based scene-generation feature coming later this year that will extend into Roblox Studio. On the distribution side, games built on Roblox's engine will soon be publishable as standalone apps on mobile, PC, and consoles — with in-browser play via link arriving by year-end. This effectively turns Roblox into a white-label game engine, not just a walled platform. New NPC capabilities include AI characters that can playtest games autonomously. Creators can also add offline modes for weak-network environments. For younger users, the discovery algorithm will surface shorter games; older users will see longer-playtime titles. The platform is also adding 2D game support with orthographic cameras and sprite-sheet imports. On the financial side, Roblox is launching a Roblox Wallet — powered by Airwallex — letting U.S. creators aged 18+ receive real-money payouts by the end of each business day and transfer funds to bank accounts, a notable shift from its historically Robux-centric economy.
