Samsara Uses AI and Fleet Trucks to Help Cities Detect Potholes
Original: Potholes cost cities millions: This company is using AI and trucks to fix them
Why This Matters
AI-powered infrastructure monitoring could revolutionize municipal maintenance efficiency
Fleet management company Samsara launched Ground Intelligence, an AI system that uses cameras on millions of commercial trucks to detect potholes and infrastructure problems for cities. Chicago has signed as a customer.
San Francisco-based Samsara developed Ground Intelligence using data from cameras mounted in millions of commercial trucks for driver monitoring. The AI model detects different pothole types and tracks deterioration over time. Samsara claims its fleet coverage exceeds Waymo's 3,000 robotaxis, enabling more comprehensive data collection. The system provides cities with proactive dashboard warnings and anonymized footage to confirm infrastructure problems. Chicago has contracted the service, with multiple other cities under agreement. Senior VP Johan Land says the system transforms reactive municipal maintenance into proactive planning, allowing coordinated repairs rather than one-off fixes. Future features may include detecting graffiti, broken guardrails, and power line issues.
