Notion shuts down Notion Mail as users shift to AI agents

Original: Notion killing Skiff-influenced email app since most users use AI agents instead

Why This Matters

Signals shift in email management from traditional interfaces to AI agents; reflects broader trend of AI automation in productivity tools.

Notion announced June 25, 2026 that it will shut down Notion Mail inbox service on September 22, citing that over half of Notion Mail users manage emails through AI agents without opening their inbox. The company is redirecting focus to AI-powered email management.

Notion acquired encrypted email startup Skiff in February 2024, shut down Skiff's email service within a year, and launched Notion Mail as a Gmail client in April 2025 built largely by former Skiff employees. However, the company announced today it is discontinuing Notion Mail across web, desktop, and iOS on September 22. Notion stated in an X post that most users now rely on AI agents to handle email workflows rather than traditional inbox interfaces. The company reported that more than half of Notion Mail users manage emails without ever opening their inbox. Email history will remain in Gmail automatically, but users must export drafts and scheduled emails by September 21. Notion is offering tools to migrate auto-label settings and snippets to other applications, and existing Notion agents managing email will continue running. Organizations requiring HIPAA coverage must transition off Notion Mail by June 30, 2026. Skiff reportedly served 2 million users before the acquisition. Notion Mail lacked the end-to-end encryption that defined Skiff as a privacy-focused email provider, instead emphasizing AI capabilities.
