At Dev Day on September 29, 2026, OpenAI announced ChatGPT features including Space (shared workspaces), Pages (a word processor), and collaborative Slides — directly targeting Microsoft's and Google's office software business.
OpenAI used its Dev Day conference in San Francisco to unveil a suite of productivity tools embedded directly in ChatGPT, sharpening what was already a quietly escalating rivalry with its largest backer, Microsoft.
The headline feature is Space — a shared workspace where teams can collaborate alongside ChatGPT and AI agent personas called Dots. CEO Sam Altman described it as a 'drive that feels alive,' with pages that can autonomously monitor team channels and update themselves.
Pages, billed as 'a new type of document built for human and agent collaboration,' lands squarely in the territory of Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Users can write, research, generate charts, and create images within it.
OpenAI also took aim at PowerPoint with collaborative slides that users can generate simply by describing them in conversation. Multiple humans and agents can co-edit and comment in real time.
The moves come as Microsoft, Salesforce, and other software incumbents have been rushing out AI features to keep pace with OpenAI. The two sides are now plainly copying each other's playbooks — Microsoft wrapping Copilot into Office, OpenAI wrapping Office-like tools into ChatGPT.
