At its Dev Day event on September 29, 2026, OpenAI announced Dots — always-on personal agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Available immediately to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users, Dots run autonomously in the background, integrated with Slack, Teams, and Microsoft's Agent 365 security controls.
OpenAI unveiled Dots at Dev Day, billing them as 'remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything.' Powered by GPT-6 Astra, Dots differ from Codex and ChatGPT in one key way: they operate independently of any specific hardware or interface, pursuing user-defined goals continuously with minimal human oversight.
Users start with a primary Dot — which they can name — and OpenAI envisions 'teams of Dots' eventually working in parallel on a user's behalf. Practical use cases cited include a software developer Dot that monitors customer feedback and ships bug fixes autonomously, and a scientist's Dot that reruns experiments as new data arrives.
Dots can be messaged through Slack, Microsoft Teams, and other workplace platforms, with SMS support forthcoming. 'Specialist Dots' can be provisioned with distinct identities, credentials, and tool access. OpenAI is already partnering with Microsoft to fold Dots into Agent 365's security framework.
Much of the underlying capability existed in Codex, but Dots packages it with a new consumer-facing brand — cartoonish floating orbs designed to feel approachable, echoing Meta's recently released Muse agent. The product is live today for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets.
