Nitter Faces X Corp. Legal Threats, Seeks Help

Original: Nitter: Update Oct 10th seeking funding and legal help

Why This Matters

Nitter's fate signals how far X Corp. will go to shut down third-party access layers.

X Corp. sent cease and desist letters to Nitter on Aug 24 and Sep 8, 2026, demanding takedown of all instances and its repository. Developer zedeus now has no legal counsel and is publicly seeking funding and legal support.

Nitter, the open-source alternative X front-end that has operated for seven years, is fighting for survival after X Corp. issued two cease and desist letters — on August 24 and September 8, 2026 — demanding permanent removal of all Nitter instances and its GitHub repository. Developer zedeus had previously stated in a September 7th update that the project would continue with legal representation secured. That turned out to be wrong. 'That was based on assurances I received and believed, which have since turned out to be untrue. I apologize for the misleading information,' zedeus wrote. Nitter currently has no lawyer. Zedeus is now soliciting donations — prioritized for legal costs — and is specifically asking for attorneys or organizations to step in. Donations are accepted via Liberapay, Patreon, Ko-fi, and several cryptocurrencies including BTC, ETH, XMR, SOL, and ZEC. Contact is available at zedeus@pm.me. Any funds not used for legal defense will support continued development of Nitter or a potential successor project.
