Bloomberg reported that Mistral AI, one of Europe's leading AI startups, is pursuing a funding round that would value the company at around €20 billion ($23.15 billion), up from €11.7 billion in September. The company launched in 2023 with the mission to democratize frontier AI and has taken a more open approach than American rivals, offering some models with open weights. Mistral has positioned itself as a European alternative to US companies, establishing partnerships with France's army, Luxembourg's government, and major European firms. The company is building a data center near Paris. Despite the growth, Mistral has raised only $4 billion to date compared to OpenAI's $186 billion and Anthropic's $161.25 billion, reflecting the gap between European and American AI labs in revenue and adoption.
