Surface Laptop Ultra: The AI PC Windows Needed

Why This Matters

First Nvidia N1X-powered flagship tests whether Windows can match Apple silicon performance.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra, powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark N1X chip, scores a 7/10 from WIRED for strong AI and creative performance, but loses ground to MacBook Pro on battery life.

The Surface Laptop Ultra is Microsoft's most serious MacBook Pro challenger yet—and WIRED's review makes that comparison explicit. At 4.4 pounds, it undercuts the 16-inch MacBook Pro on weight while debuting Nvidia's RTX Spark N1X 'superchip,' designed to handle on-device AI, gaming, and content creation from a single piece of silicon.

The build quality earns genuine praise: best-ever laptop display brightness, music-ready speakers, a large haptic touchpad, and a magnetic USB-C port. Design details like hidden side vents and curved screen corners give it a polished feel. The keyboard is described as fantastic.

But the review lands at 7/10, not higher. Battery life can't match the MacBook Pro—a recurring Achilles heel for Windows flagships. Lower-RAM configurations also limit the AI features that are supposed to be the machine's calling card. A handful of popular games remain unsupported on the N1X platform. Minor ergonomic gripes include awkward lid-opening (no finger lip) and an oddly placed power button.

The Surface Laptop Ultra replaces the experimental Surface Laptop Studio form factor with a clean clamshell approach—a deliberate retreat from hybrid designs that never found a mass audience. Microsoft is betting on horsepower over novelty this time.
