Libreboot 26.10 adds UEFI and 233 Chromebooks
Original: Libreboot 26.10 "Ominous Olive" released with UEFI, Chromebook support
Why This Matters
UEFI support opens Libreboot to Windows users and a vastly wider hardware base.
Libreboot 26.10 'Ominous Olive,' released Oct 15 2026, ships EDK2 UEFI as its default payload, adds 233 Intel/AMD Chromebooks via MrChromebox import, and drops U-Boot x86 support.
Libreboot 26.10 'Ominous Olive' is a significant update to the open-source coreboot-based firmware project. The headline change: EDK2 (MrChromebox's UEFI payload) replaces GRUB/SeaBIOS as the default payload, making Libreboot compatible with Microsoft Windows for the first time. GRUB and SeaBIOS remain available as EFI builds in flash for backward compatibility.
The release imports 233 Intel/AMD Chromebooks from the MrChromebox coreboot project — covering hardware up to the most recent Intel and AMD generations. Libreboot's version sets the HAP bit by default at build time to disable Intel ME, a step MrChromebox doesn't take by default. Chromebook binaries are source-only for now; users must build from source. Only Baytrail (Kip) has been tested so far.
Other notable changes include modern GPU support via EDK2, a 15h.org fork for Fam15h AMD hardware, and a new AGENTS.md file declaring a strict anti-AI policy — which lead developer Leah Rowe describes as 'the most important change in the release.' U-Boot x86 payload support has been removed entirely. Users with existing setups should read the changelog carefully, as the payload switch introduces caveats that may affect their configurations.
