Why This Matters
Addresses critical digital preservation gaps for AI development history and cultural heritage
Internet Archive Switzerland, an independent Swiss foundation based in St. Gallen, has been established to preserve digital knowledge. Led by Executive Director Roman Griesfelder, the organization focuses on universal access to information through two key initiatives targeting AI models and endangered archives.
Internet Archive Switzerland operates as a non-profit foundation in St. Gallen with the mission of Universal Access to All Knowledge, aligned with other Internet Archive organizations. The foundation addresses digital preservation challenges including format changes, storage failures, and content deletion. Two main projects include the Gen AI Archive, partnering with University of St. Gallen to preserve AI models and Large Language Models for future generations, and Endangered Archives initiative working with UNESCO to rescue vulnerable cultural materials from conflict and disasters. Executive Director Roman Griesfelder, an Austrian sociologist and business administrator living in Switzerland since 1998, leads the organization with experience in cultural institutions and management consulting.
