Why This Matters

Provides first objective global benchmark for autonomous vehicle competition as market matures beyond demos and hype.

Autnmy AI released the Road to Autonomy Index, a benchmarking system evaluating autonomous vehicle companies globally. China's Baidu Apollo Go ranks first in robotaxis, ahead of Waymo, with Pony.ai, WeRide, and Tesla following.

Autnmy AI, an advisory and research startup, developed a generative AI platform to create the Road to Autonomy Index, a real-time benchmarking system for autonomous vehicle companies. The system analyzes data from global public databases, federal and state reports, SEC documents, and public exchanges, updating every 12 hours. It evaluates companies based on operations, scale, revenue, commercial partnerships, manufacturing, and safety records. The platform does not scrape information but uses publicly available data and licensed sources. The index includes four separate rankings for robotaxis, autonomous driving licensing companies, autonomous trucks, and delivery bots. The robotaxi rankings show China's dominance: Baidu Apollo Go leads, followed by Waymo in second place, with Chinese companies Pony.ai and WeRide in third and fourth positions respectively. Tesla ranks fifth. Meanwhile, in Texas, vehicle registration data shows expansion: Waymo increased from 577 to 620 autonomous vehicles (7.5% growth), Tesla grew from 42 to 69 vehicles (64% increase), and Zoox maintained its fleet. Notably, Zoox cannot operate commercially without federal exemption, though it can provide rides without charging customers.
