EloElo raises $80M from NBCUniversal for India microdramas
Original: India’s EloElo nabs $80M from NBCUniversal to bet on the country’s rising microdrama market
Why This Matters
India's microdrama market is scaling fast, drawing Hollywood-level investment before it peaks.
Indian microdrama app EloElo secured $80M in Series C from Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal, valuing it at $500M. Its Story TV platform has 33M active users and 5,000+ titles across six languages.
EloElo, founded in 2020 by former Flipkart exec Saurabh Pandey, has raised $80 million in a Series C round led by Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal, bringing total funding to $130 million at a $500 million valuation. The company's Story TV app is one of India's top microdrama platforms, with over 33 million active users drawn to its catalog of 5,000-plus titles in six languages. Users average 95 minutes daily across multiple sessions — a retention number that rivals established streaming services.
The raise reflects growing investor confidence in India's microdrama segment, where over 118 million users watch serialized short-form content monthly. Analysts project the category could generate $3–4 billion in annual revenue by 2030. Story TV competes with Kuku TV and Quick TV domestically, while also going up against free-content giants like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. EloElo counters with premium content partnerships — including one with Balaji Telefilms — and a mix of subscription tiers and ad-supported free content.
Pandey argues the format fills a gap that short clips never addressed: serialized storytelling designed for mobile, consumed in bursts throughout the day rather than scheduled viewing. NBCUniversal's involvement signals that Western media conglomerates are actively scouting positions in emerging-market mobile entertainment before the market matures.
