Huawei announced at its Connect conference on September 17, 2026, that it is moving the Ascend 960DT AI chip launch from Q3 2027 to Q1 2027. The chip doubles performance over its predecessor and underpins Huawei's new Peerium Computing Architecture, which can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards in a SuperCluster configuration.
Huawei confirmed at its annual Connect conference that the Ascend 960DT will ship roughly six months ahead of its original Q3 2027 target. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch the chips are 'advancing year by year,' with rotating and acting chairman David Wang delivering the updated timeline on stage.
The chip sits at the center of Huawei's Peerium Computing Architecture, a strategy to aggregate hundreds of thousands — eventually millions — of AI chips into a single logical computer. The glue is UnifiedBus, Huawei's proprietary interconnect for linking processors with memory, storage, and networking. Its Atlas 950 SuperCluster is the first system built on Peerium and can scale to 256,000 accelerator cards.
Not everything is straightforwardly positive, though. China tech analyst Rui Ma flagged on X that an earlier Atlas 960 SuperPoD spec cited 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, while this week's announcement described a 4,096-chip system — a significant step down in scale.
The announcement lands one week before a scheduled Trump-Xi meeting in Washington on September 24. U.S. export restrictions have not slowed Huawei's chip roadmap, and Ma argued the restrictions are 'futile' given China's self-sufficiency imperatives. Meanwhile, Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu stated that Chinese companies must advance AI capabilities before they can meaningfully assess the risks of more powerful systems.
