Why This Matters

Grounded's vehicle-agnostic pivot signals growing demand for flexible fleet customization beyond EV-only solutions.

Detroit-based Grounded closed a $5M seed round to scale its modular van customization business. Founded in 2022, the startup pivoted from EV-only to vehicle-agnostic solutions after GM discontinued BrightDrop and Ford canceled its next-gen electric Transit.

Grounded, a Detroit-based startup founded in 2022, has raised a $5 million seed round to expand its modular van customization platform. The round includes repeat investments from Also Capital and The 81 Collection, alongside Animal Capital, the Michigan Outdoor Innovation Fund, and various SpaceX alumni, according to CEO Sam Shapiro.

Originally focused on customizing electric vans like Ford's E-Transit and GM's BrightDrop for the 'van life' market, Grounded later shifted toward small business fleet solutions. After GM discontinued BrightDrop and Ford axed its next-gen electric Transit plans, Grounded pivoted further to support both electric and combustion-powered vehicles, including popular models like Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

The company has opened a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Detroit, with production beginning this month and capacity expected to ramp in 2026. Existing customers span commercial (Colgate, Nokia), medical (Wayne State University Medical), and veterinary sectors. Chief Product Officer Nadia Meyer cited "notable growth" from food, beverage, and public safety customers. Grounded also plans to incorporate electric and hybrid options from startup Harbinger.
