Touchscreen MacBook Pro tops out at $14,549
Original: Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro pushes laptop pricing to a new extreme
Why This Matters
Sets a new high-water mark for consumer laptop pricing industry-wide.
Apple launched its first touchscreen MacBook Pro on Oct. 28, 2026, starting at $2,899. A fully loaded 16-inch M5 Max model with 8TB SSD and 128GB RAM hits $14,549—up $4,400 from the previous top-tier price.
Apple's touchscreen MacBook Pro marks the company's most significant MacBook design shift in years, arriving nearly a decade after the ill-fated Touch Bar experiment. The new lineup starts at $2,899, but the pricing scales steeply. As MacRumors first spotted, the fully configured 14-inch model reaches $14,249, while the 16-inch tops out at $14,549—a $4,400 jump over the previous generation's $10,149 ceiling.
Both peak configs ship with the M5 Max chip: 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU. Storage upgrades drive much of the sticker shock. Moving to 4TB SSD adds $1,000; 8TB costs $3,000 extra; and the new 16TB option tacks on $7,000. Maxing out memory at 128GB adds another $2,000, and nano-texture glass runs an additional $150. Apple cites ongoing memory shortages and AI hardware demand as factors behind the pricing pressure. Preorders open October 30, with units shipping November 6.
