Apple debuts touchscreen MacBook Pro at $2,899

Original: Apple launches its new touchscreen MacBook Pro

Why This Matters

Apple entering the touchscreen laptop market shifts a decade-long industry stance.

Apple launched its first touchscreen MacBook Pro on Oct. 28, 2026, starting at $2,899 for 14-inch and $3,399 for 16-inch, powered by M5 Pro/Max chips with up to 128GB RAM and 16TB storage.

After years of publicly dismissing the idea — Steve Jobs once called a touchscreen Mac 'ergonomically terrible' — Apple has reversed course and shipped a MacBook Pro with a full touchscreen display. The new 14-inch and 16-inch models feature a PROLED XDR Display with 2,000 nits peak brightness and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. A newly engineered hinge stabilizes the screen during touch input and video calls. The notch is gone, replaced by a Dynamic Island-style cutout. Both sizes run M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, support up to 128GB unified memory and 16TB storage, and carry three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, MagSafe, SDXC, and a headphone jack. The M5 Max variant supports up to four external displays. At 3.0 lbs and 4.0 lbs respectively, both are lighter than their non-touch predecessors. Pre-orders open October 30; shipping starts November 6. The launch is the second major product debut under new CEO John Turnus, who also introduced the foldable iPhone Duo in September. A standard MacBook Pro with M6 launched the previous day at $1,999.
