Apple acqui-hires team from podcast AI startup Huxe

Original: Apple discloses deal to hire team and license tech from personalized podcast startup Huxe

Why This Matters

Personalized AI audio is becoming a battleground for Apple, Spotify, and Google.

Apple disclosed to the European Commission a deal to hire staff and license IP from Huxe AI, a personalized podcast startup that shut down in May 2026, in a reverse acqui-hire arrangement.

Apple filed a regulatory disclosure with the European Commission confirming it reached an agreement to extend employment offers to 'certain employees of Huxe AI' and to obtain a non-exclusive license to the startup's intellectual property. The deal, first spotted by MacRumors, was filed June 9 — shortly after Huxe announced its shutdown on May 21, 2026.

Huxe was founded by alumni from Google's NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook), the product that popularized AI-generated audio overviews. Huxe aimed to take that concept further with fully personalized podcasts. When it closed, the team said it was pulling its app from both the Apple and Google stores, halting service, and deleting user data.

The filing does not identify which employees received offers or confirm acceptances, and Apple has made no public statement about its plans for the technology. The timing is notable: Huxe's shutdown came one day after Spotify announced its own AI-powered podcast generation features, signaling intensifying competition in personalized audio. Apple Podcasts remains one of the dominant podcast platforms globally, and adding AI-generated, personalized audio could directly answer Spotify's move.
