Tesla Renames 'Full Self-Driving' in Europe

Why This Matters

EU approval would open a major market for Tesla's high-margin software subscription business.

Tesla renamed its driver assistance system 'Tesla Assisted Driving' in Europe after Germany's transport ministry flagged 'Full Self-Driving' as misleading. The change may unlock EU-wide approval and a major new revenue stream.

Tesla has dropped the 'Full Self-Driving (Supervised)' branding in Europe, replacing it with 'Tesla Assisted Driving' following direct pressure from Germany's transport minister Steffen Bilger. Bilger publicly called the original name misleading — the system still requires drivers to stay alert and take control when needed — after speaking with Tesla last month. Tesla itself proposed the new name, according to an official ministry release. Bilger has since pledged to advocate for EU-wide approval, with a continent-wide vote potentially coming later in 2026. Elon Musk thanked Bilger on X. The Netherlands was the first European country to approve FSD (Supervised) in March 2026, though Reuters reported this week that Tesla's European approval campaign relied on flawed safety research, and that Dutch regulator RDW faced heavy pressure from Tesla and its online supporters. FSD has grown substantially more capable — handling parking, surface streets, and highways — and Tesla recently enabled it to intervene even when not actively engaged, if a collision is detected. Still, it remains the subject of federal investigations and civil lawsuits tied to crashes.
