Zest Launches SMS-Based AI Restaurant Concierge

Why This Matters
SMS AI agents targeting app-layer tasks signal a real shift in consumer product strategy.
Zest, a restaurant discovery app backed by Alexis Ohanian's 776 and Kindred Ventures, launched an AI concierge on Oct. 30 that recommends restaurants and books reservations via text, including group chats.
Zest, founded in November 2024 with $1.8M in pre-seed funding from 776 and Kindred Ventures, has introduced an SMS-based AI restaurant concierge reachable at (212) 470-6067. The agent draws on users' actual dining history—pulled from credit card data via Plaid—to make personalized recommendations without requiring weeks of onboarding. It can filter suggestions by cuisine, neighborhood, dietary restrictions, and occasion, and books tables through OpenTable, Resy, and SevenRooms without leaving the text thread.
The feature also works in group chats, blending multiple users' preferences and offering an in-thread voting tool to settle disputes before booking. CEO Mario Gomez-Hall summed up the strategic shift plainly: "The agent is the product now. You text it, and it answers from your own history and your friends'. It doesn't need weeks of conversation to learn you because it starts from where you've actually been."
Zest joins a wave of startups—including Instinct and Poke—betting that SMS agents will replace standalone apps for routine tasks. The move reflects a broader industry rethink: if AI can handle discovery and booking in one thread, why open a separate app at all?
