Why This Matters
Samsung's new form factor signals that foldable phone design is entering a diversification phase targeting mainstream content consumption habits.
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold8 at its second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2026, featuring a wider, shorter passport-shaped design with a 10:16 cover screen and 4:3 inner display. The new form factor sits between the Fold8 Ultra and Flip8, targeting mobile video viewers.
Samsung revealed the Galaxy Z Fold8 at its July 2026 Galaxy Unpacked event, introducing a passport-shaped book-fold design distinct from its traditional tall, narrow form. The device features a 10:16 aspect ratio cover screen and a 4:3 unfolded inner display measuring 7.6 inches — optimized for both landscape and vertical video content including YouTube, Instagram Reels, and Netflix. Samsung SVP of Mobile Product Management Drew Blackard stated the design responds to a key behavioral shift: 'Consumers watch 80 percent of their video on mobile devices now, not in front of a TV screen or tablet.' The Fold8 fills a new slot in Samsung's folding portfolio, positioned between the productivity-focused Fold8 Ultra and the compact Flip8. Blackard also noted that last year's Galaxy Z Fold7 reached a hardware parity milestone, shipping with the same 200-megapixel camera as the Galaxy S25 Ultra — enabling Samsung to now experiment with new form factors without sacrificing specs. The design bears resemblance to the original Google Pixel Fold and the rumored form of Apple's first foldable device. Samsung's earlier Galaxy Z TriFold, priced at $2,899, was a limited-run product that sold out in multiple US drops before being discontinued.
