Why This Matters

Fusion energy is attracting record investment in 2026, with over $1.5B raised, as AI-driven power demand accelerates.

Realta Fusion will establish its R&D center 'Forge' at the former Oscar Meyer hot dog factory in Madison, Wisconsin, targeting first plasma in 2029. Wisconsin and Madison are offering approximately $55 million in combined incentives to attract the fusion startup.

Realta Fusion has selected the former Oscar Meyer factory in Madison, Wisconsin as the site for its new research and development facility, called Forge. Co-founder and CEO Kieran Furlong told TechCrunch that Forge will produce its first plasma in 2029. The site was chosen for its ample power supply and proximity to Realta's existing headquarters. A key factor was bipartisan government support: Wisconsin's governor and legislature backed a sales tax exemption for the fusion industry, signed into law in April, which alone saves Realta an estimated $37.5 million. The state is also providing $15 million in enterprise zone tax credits, while Madison is contributing $2.8 million in tax increment financing, bringing the total incentive package to approximately $55 million. Realta, which was spun out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, also cited access to local plasma physics talent and a 'state champion' advantage. The announcement comes as fusion startups have raised over $1.5 billion in 2026 alone, driven by surging electricity demand from electrification and AI data centers. Realta recently demonstrated direct conversion of fusion energy into electricity, a potential milestone toward commercial power plants.
