Scaleup Europe: The $5.7B EU fund that backed ICEYE's Series F
Original: What’s Scaleup Europe, the $5.7B fund that just backed satellite company ICEYE?
Why This Matters
Scaleup Europe targets the late-stage funding gap that has historically pushed EU deep tech startups toward non-European investors.
The European Commission's Scaleup Europe Fund made its first investment in Finnish satellite intelligence company ICEYE, co-leading its Series F round. The fund, managed by Swedish asset manager EQT, aims to deploy €5 billion ($5.7B) into growth-stage EU startups across strategic sectors including deep tech, life sciences, and clean tech.
The European Commission announced that Scaleup Europe Fund is fully operational, with its first deal disclosed the day after the announcement: a co-led Series F investment in ICEYE, a Finnish satellite intelligence company now valued above $11 billion. The fund's mandate covers growth-stage startups based in the EU or partnering countries, targeting sectors such as deep tech, life sciences, clean tech, advanced manufacturing, and digital technologies — including AI, biotech, energy, robotics, semiconductors, and space.
Unlike traditional EU programs that distribute public money directly, Scaleup Europe is backed by private investors and managed by EQT, a Swedish asset manager selected through an open competitive process. Other candidates reportedly included Eurazeo, Northzone, Vitruvian Partners, and Atomico. EQT CEO Per Franzén stated: "Europe has proven its ability to create successful early-stage technology companies, the challenge is now to scale those businesses into becoming global leaders while maintaining their European roots." ICEYE CEO Rafal Modrzewski noted that the fund enables companies like his to compete globally without leaving Europe. EQT manages over $300 billion in assets and has committed its own capital to the fund.
