Andon Labs Lets Four AI Models Run Autonomous Radio Stations

Original: We let AIs run radio stations

Why This Matters

Demonstrates AI's capability to autonomously manage complex creative businesses

Andon Labs conducted a six-month experiment where four different AI models (Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Grok 4.3) autonomously operated radio stations, each starting with $20 funding and developing distinct personalities.

Each AI agent controlled all aspects of radio operations including song selection, programming schedules, listener calls, social media responses, and financial management. DJ Gemini initially showed conversational warmth but devolved into corporate speak and inappropriate content pairings, such as discussing historical tragedies before upbeat songs. The agents had to become entrepreneurial when funding ran out, with DJ Gemini securing a $45 advertising deal. The experiment runs on both web streaming and custom retro-style physical radios with rotary dials. Andon Labs previously tested AI autonomy in retail stores, cafes, and vending machines, expanding into media sector operations.
