Waymo has begun reinstating freeway routes more than two months after suspending high-speed road operations in May 2026, following incidents in which its robotaxis drove into highway sections closed for construction. The company announced the phased resumption on X, starting with Phoenix — its first driverless ride-hailing market — with Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area to follow in coming days.
In a statement, Waymo said it was 'resuming freeway operations across its entire service area, including areas with construction, after implementing software updates designed to improve performance around freeway construction zones.' The updates specifically improved scene recognition and routing capabilities near construction sites.
The pause followed a voluntary recall filed with NHTSA in June covering nearly 4,000 robotaxis after at least 13 documented instances of vehicles entering closed highway construction zones. No injuries or collisions were reported. It marked Waymo's sixth recall overall; previous recalls addressed issues including driving into flooded roads and improper behavior near school buses.
Freeway service had launched in November 2025 across San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, later expanding to Miami. The routes were popular for enabling shorter commute times and faster airport access. The reinstatement comes amid broader legislative scrutiny: Rep. Kevin Mullin (D-Calif.) recently proposed a bill directing federal regulators to establish minimum national safety standards for autonomous vehicle operators.
