Waymo opened its public robotaxi service in Las Vegas on September 14, 2026, weeks after Nevada regulators granted approval. Starting with 'dozens' of its new Ojai minivans, the Alphabet unit is inviting riders on a rolling basis, covering the Strip south of Highway 589 and into Boulder Junction.
Waymo's Las Vegas launch marks its 15th U.S. market, following the same invite-first playbook used in cities like Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. The initial fleet consists of 'dozens' of the company's new Ojai minivan robotaxis, with coverage from the Strip south of Highway 589 to Boulder Junction. Full public access typically follows within one to two months of an official launch.
The Nevada Transportation Authority authorized Waymo to operate up to 1,000 autonomous vehicles in Clark County over the next year. Tesla received approval for up to 5,000 vehicles, and Uber—operating through Hyundai subsidiary Motional and Zoox—was cleared for up to 1,000. That totals a potential 7,000 robotaxis across the county, though none of the three are expected to hit those ceilings. Tesla's Cybercab chief engineer Eric Early told state regulators in August the company would be 'extremely happy and satisfied if we could get ourselves up to 2,500, maybe a bit higher than that in the next year.'
Zoox already operates commercially in Las Vegas. Waymo's broader expansion push also included simultaneous launches in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa earlier in September. The company's global fleet now exceeds 4,000 vehicles spread across more than a dozen cities.
