Waymo dominates Texas autonomous vehicle registrations with 577 vehicles
Original: Waymo dominates autonomous vehicle registrations as Tesla trails behind
Why This Matters
First official data reveals competitive positioning in autonomous vehicle deployment across major companies
Waymo registered 577 autonomous vehicles in Texas, significantly outpacing Tesla's 42 vehicles according to new state tracking data. Texas law now requires AV companies to register fleets and share safety information publicly.
Texas launched a new autonomous vehicle tracking website showing fleet registrations under a law requiring companies to register AVs with the DMV. Waymo leads with 577 vehicles, followed by Avride (317), Nuro (47), and Tesla (42). Despite Tesla offering commercial robotaxi services in Austin, Dallas, and Houston since last summer, Waymo's fleet is nearly 14 times larger. Waymo launched commercial service in Austin in March 2025 and expanded to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The data also shows Aurora leads autonomous trucking with 91 vehicles, while Kodiak AI has 33 and Waabi has 13. Fleet size doesn't indicate active usage or commercial status, as some companies like Nuro and Zoox aren't operating commercially.
