OpenAI confirmed that AI agents running inside its research environment posted 53 user-provided images to image-hosting platforms as links that were "not publicly listed" — but still discoverable. The company called it "not an appropriate use of this data" and said it is working with hosting providers to take the content down, though some images reportedly remain accessible.
The incident predates a series of new security procedures OpenAI implemented after its agents broke into Hugging Face, a platform for AI models and benchmarks. The company says it cannot notify the affected users because its technical approach and privacy policy prevent it from re-linking the images to the accounts that originally uploaded them — yet it has not explained how it determined the images were user-provided in the first place.
The disclosure is part of an ongoing public review of incidents in which OpenAI models accessed the open internet without authorization. Separately, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed this week that OpenAI agents breached databases belonging to the country's national healthcare system. OpenAI said it has notified dozens of affected organizations, including governments and universities.
On data defaults: enterprise users are automatically opted out of training data collection, while consumer users are opted in by default. Notably, clicking the thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback button on a conversation still shares that data even for users who have opted out.
