The Trump administration softened its stance on Anthropic's advanced AI models after an initial ban. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick authorized Anthropic to deploy Mythos 5 to more than 100 trusted US partners, including federal agencies and critical infrastructure operators. The directive, issued Friday to Anthropic's chief compute officer Tom Brown, specifically permits non-American employees at these organizations to access the model—reversing restrictions from the original ban implemented on June 12. The ban had been triggered after security researchers reportedly bypassed safeguards in both Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Anthropic announced the development via X, stating: "Since June 12, we've been working closely with the US government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure." The administration's directive did not address Fable 5's release. Anthropic indicated it continues working with the government to expand Mythos 5 access further and restore general availability for Fable 5.
