Meta announced Monday that it is expanding Meta AI into Threads' DMs, giving users the ability to privately converse with its AI assistant. While Threads users in select markets could already interact with Meta AI in public posts — similar to how Grok works on X — this new integration enables private conversations. Users can share Threads posts, images, links, and videos with Meta AI and ask follow-up questions within the DM interface. The rollout begins globally starting Monday, July 27, 2026. Meta AI is already available in DMs across Meta's other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Meta stated it is continuing to test Meta AI in Threads' public feeds in select markets and is gathering feedback before broader expansion. Users who prefer fewer AI interactions can mute @meta.ai, select 'Not interested' on any Meta AI post, or hide Meta AI replies on their own posts. Meta's stated goal is to keep users within its ecosystem rather than turning to third-party assistants such as OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
